Each month we celebrate two of our most positive and active clients with our VIP of the Month award.

As an intern at Bakeworks since March, Rachel Lofton has shown great enthusiasm on the job. Rachel has been a member of our Community Integration program for eight years, since the program for hearing individuals began. In this program, where folks with disabilities learn ways to travel around the city and engage in volunteer work, the focus is on connecting people with disabilities to their community and on building independence.

Rachel has had great success in Community Integration and has since moved onto an internship at Bakeworks where she has been very willing to learn new tasks and always with a big smile on her face. She is meticulous in her personal hygiene and is an all around all-star.

Melanie Bautista, one of our Concord Community Integration clients, joined the program in 2012 and volunteers weekly at the Concord Library. While working toward achieving the President’s Volunteer Service Award, Melanie is always focused and dedicated. She has improved her social skills by researching conversation starters and now greets everyone in her group first thing. She is independent, as evidenced by her taking the bus or driving herself to program, and she is always working on developing that independence further.

Congratulations to our VIPs for the month of November!

A New Resource for Job Seekers http://www.toolworks.org/news/2127 http://www.toolworks.org/news/2127#comments Fri, 08 Nov 2013 23:16:34 +0000 http://www.toolworks.org/?p=2127 Read more]]> Toolworks’ newest program, the Disability Employment Initiative (DEI), is built to improve communication between state and local employment and training programs to increase employment options for people with disabilities.

Our team primarily supports San Francisco’s Comprehensive and Neighborhood Access Points, offering job assistance and training resources in American Sign Language, Cantonese, and Spanish in addition to English. DEI started operating under Toolworks in June of 2013 and has already started making a difference in the community.

One of our first job seekers, Laxmi Lwin, provides a clear example of the types of people who are benefiting. Laxmi, a Nepalese immigrant, started to find her customer service oriented job at her family’s restaurant was no longer a good match as she started to lose her hearing.

Though a multifaceted approach focused on developing Laxmi’s communications skills, finding hard-of-hearing support groups, practicing interviews and working on cover letters, she was able to build the confidence and skills necessary to start looking for work. After discovering what types of positions she was most interested in pursuing, our team helped her apply to several hotels in San Francisco.

In short order, she landed a full-time position as a lead housekeeper in Union Square, where Toolworks kept working with her and her employer. Our team coached her on how to disclose her hearing loss to her employer, educated her on employee rights, and offered solutions to her and her employer to ensure her success.

After months of uncertainty, Laxmi is now assured in her new position and ready for the future.

Clients of Note – October http://www.toolworks.org/news/2120 http://www.toolworks.org/news/2120#comments Tue, 29 Oct 2013 23:40:20 +0000 http://www.toolworks.org/?p=2120 Read more]]> Toolworks has exceptional clients in every one of our departments. Each month we celebrate two of our most positive and active clients with our VIP of the Month award.

A member of our Janitorial Services program for many years, Garland Miller works at the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. At the Court, where Toolworks has employed a team of ten janitors for over 25 years, Garland has distinguished himself as VIP due to his reliability and dependability on the job. He maintains a perfect attendance record, rolls with any changes in procedure, and keeps up strong friendships with the rest of the staff.

In our 10-week Janitorial Training program on Treasure Island, we recognized Carl Jones as VIP of the month as he is extremely passionate and focused on the quality of his work.

Carl is one of the 20 trainees who graduated from our program this past year and has continued to work steadily on small contracts on Treasure Island. He has made considerable improvements in the quality of his work and has also increased his speed. He adapts well to different tasks and locations and he always makes himself available on short notice.

Congratulations to our VIPs for the month of October!

Clients of Note – September http://www.toolworks.org/news/2068 http://www.toolworks.org/news/2068#comments Sat, 28 Sep 2013 18:14:41 +0000 http://www.toolworks.org/?p=2068 Read more]]> Toolworks has exceptional clients in every one of our departments. Each month we celebrate two of our most positive and active clients with our VIP of the Month award.

This month, in our Housing Partnerships program, Paul Beck stands out as a VIP. Paul lives in UA Homes, a transitional housing site where Toolworks provides Resident Services. Paul is an energetic participant in our therapy and social activity groups. While he is still working hard to find permanent employment, he has had success finding temporary jobs and contributes what he can to the community. More than that, he demonstrates his caring nature by providing other residents with information about job opportunities and by bringing in food for less financially-secure residents. He really enhances the sense of community at UA Homes.

At the Marriott Marquis, where Toolworks has been providing staffing and job coaching since 1989, our Employment Services department recognized London Lacey as VIP of the month for his consistent great attitude and focus on teamwork.

One of fourteen Toolworkers working at the Marriott, London comes to work with a smile on his face every day. He always greets guests, hotel staff and peers with a warm welcome and he takes initiative, looking for where help is needed even before someone has to ask.  Further, he makes himself available to fill-in wherever help is needed in our housekeeping, engineering, banqueting, recycling and hospitality departments.

He is a great model for what a Toolworker can be.

Congratulations to our VIPs for the month of September!
