Housing Partnership
Toolworks Partners
with Affordable Housing Developers to Deliver Unique, One-on-One
Services to Low-Income Individuals in
the East Bay
One
of the most challenging issues faced by people with disabilities
in the Bay Area is the lack of affordable, accessible housing. Toolworks
is working in collaboration with a number of community partners
to address this need.
Specialized
Services - Toolworks is providing self-advocacy training to
people with disabilities so that they can take part in the political
process to create more affordable, accessible housing. Toolworks
is also providing supportive services to people with disabilities
who live in affordable housing, so that they can develop their independent
living and vocational skills.
Specialized
Partnerships - Toolworks has developed an extensive network
of community partners to address the needs of housing for people
with disabilities. Toolworks is working in collaboration with two
of the East Bay's largest housing developers, Affordable
Housing Associates (AHA) and Resources
for Community Development (RCD), who collectively own over 1,000
affordable housing units, to expand opportunities for people with
disabilities in the Bay Area.
Specialized
Housing - June of 2005 marks the opening of University
Neighborhood Apartments (UNA). UNA is the result of the collaboration
between AHA, Hearth
Homes, and Toolworks to create 27 units of 100% affordable and
100% accessible apartments in downtown Berkeley. The universal design
features mean that all areas of the building, including each apartment,
the community room, even the play structure, are accessible to people
with all ranges of mobility. UNA will house families and individuals
of all ages and all abilities, with specialized services available
on-site, creating a community that is as inclusive as the building
itself.
